By Marquita Lynch, Founder and Director of Second Chance Dayton Group Home

Once upon a time, nestled in the heart of Dayton, Ohio, a beacon of hope emerged. It was called Second Chance Dayton Behavioral Health, and its mission was to bring healing and hope to families and individuals facing mental health or substance abuse challenges. This is the story of how our family-centered approach became a lifeline for those in need.

It all started when I saw a need, a need to extend our services beyond the group home and help even more families in crisis. In 2019, we launched the behavioral health unit of Second Chance Dayton, offering inclusive and integrated treatment services for school-age youth and adults. This expansion allowed us to reach individuals who were seeking therapy and support to overcome their mental health or substance abuse struggles.

At the heart of our approach lies a simple yet profound belief: family comes first. We understand that families play a crucial role in the healing process. Their love, support, and understanding can make all the difference in the world to someone on the path to recovery. With this belief as our guiding principle, we developed a family-centered approach that would change lives forever.

Meet the dedicated team at Second Chance Dayton Behavioral Health, where compassion and human connection are at the core of everything we do. Our clinical and support staff, handpicked for their expertise and empathy, work tirelessly to provide the highest level of care to our clients.

One of the remarkable members of our team is Lisa, a licensed therapist with a heart of gold. She carries with her a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the human psyche. But it is her genuine love for the work she does that sets her apart. Every day, Lisa goes above and beyond to create a safe and nurturing environment for our clients.

Lisa’s journey to becoming a therapist was deeply personal. She once struggled with her mental health and found solace in therapy. The transformation she experienced inspired her to help others on their own healing journeys. Now, as part of the Second Chance Dayton family, she continues to be a beacon of hope for those who need it most.

As families come to us seeking help, we understand that each person’s journey is unique. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing, and we celebrate the diversity of our clients’ experiences. When a new family walks through our doors, we greet them with open arms and open hearts.

The admissions process is not just about paperwork and assessments; it’s about forming a deep connection with the families we serve. We take the time to listen to their stories, understand their struggles, and offer a comforting hand of support. Our goal is to create an Individual Service Plan that is tailored to their specific needs and goals.

One such family that touched our hearts was the Johnsons. Struggling with the challenges of a teenage son grappling with substance abuse, they felt lost and overwhelmed. Mrs. Johnson shared tearfully how her once vibrant and happy boy had changed. But in that moment of vulnerability, we saw the glimmer of hope that we could bring back.

We assured the Johnsons that they were not alone and that we were here to walk this journey with them. Their son, Jake, joined our Substance Abuse Recovery Plan, and the healing began. Our team of professionals worked hand-in-hand with the Johnsons, offering counseling, support groups, and wellness sessions.

But it wasn’t just about the therapy; it was about building a support system for Jake and his family. We invited them to our family support group, where they found comfort in the stories of others who had faced similar struggles. Mrs. Johnson no longer felt alone; she found solace in the community we had created.

As weeks turned into months, we witnessed a remarkable transformation in Jake. The cloud of addiction that once shrouded him was lifting, and he was starting to find his way back to the vibrant young man he once was. The Johnsons’ commitment to their son’s healing was unwavering, and we stood beside them every step of the way.

We celebrated Jake’s victories, both big and small. From the first day of sobriety to the moment he rekindled his love for painting, each milestone brought tears of joy to our eyes. And when the day finally came for Jake to complete his program, we gathered as a family to bid him farewell, knowing that he was now equipped with the tools to face life’s challenges.

The Johnsons left our program with a renewed sense of hope and a newfound strength as a family. Their story is just one of the many we have witnessed at Second Chance Dayton Behavioral Health. With each success, we are reminded of the transformative power of our family-centered approach.

We believe in empowering families to become agents of change in their own lives. Our goal is not to impose solutions but to walk beside them, offering guidance and support as they discover their own path to healing. This empowerment is the key to lasting change and resilience.

But the journey does not end with the completion of a program. We stay connected with our families, checking in on their progress and offering ongoing support. The bonds we form during their time with us become lifelong connections, a network of support that they can turn to in times of need.

As I look back on the journey of Second Chance Dayton Behavioral Health, my heart swells with gratitude. It is a privilege to witness the transformation of lives and to be a part of a community that truly cares. Every day, we continue to learn from the resilience of our clients and the unwavering commitment of our team.

In the years to come, we dream of expanding our services further, reaching even more families in need of healing and hope. With the support of our community and the dedication of our team, we believe that anything is possible.

The story of Second Chance Dayton Behavioral Health is a story of healing, hope, and the power of family. It is a story that will continue to unfold, one life at a time. And as long as there are hearts in need of healing, we will be here, ready to offer a second chance at life’s beautiful journey.
